Welding transformers are the classic, time-tested power sources designed for manual metal arc welding (MMA/Stick) using Alternating Current (AC). Their internal construction is remarkably simple—consisting primarily of a massive magnetic core and heavy copper or aluminum windings—making them virtually indestructible and incredibly resilient to voltage fluctuations, extreme dust, moisture, and freezing temperatures. While transformers are significantly heavier, bulkier, and produce a slightly rougher weld bead compared to modern DC inverters, they remain absolutely indispensable in heavy manufacturing, agricultural repair, and rugged construction sites where extreme durability, minimal maintenance, and the ability to weld thick steel are paramount.
